FUTURE OF AFRICA IN DANGER DUE TO MILLIONS WITH AIDS JANUARY 1, 2000

Associated Press reported: “The future of all of Africa is in jeopardy unless Africans unite to fight AIDS -- the ‘deadly epidemic racing across our land,’ Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi said Friday in a New Year's address. Calling AIDS the biggest human disaster in the region since sleeping sickness left several million people dead at the turn of the last century, Moi aid, ‘Anything that can be said or done to halt the progress of the disease must be said and done.’ AIDS has killed at least 760,000 people in Kenya and the HIV virus that causes it has infected an estimated 1.9 million people in the nation of 30 million. UNICEF says the number of AIDS orphans in Kenya would reach 900,000 in 2000 and 13 million in all of Africa..."

NEW PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA TAKES 'SWEEPING POWERS' December 31, 1999

Reuters reported today: "Russia's Acting President Vladimir Putin, who replaced Boris Yeltsin Friday, assumes sweeping presidential powers in a country of more than 140 million people spanning 11 time zones. The president is the formal head of state and commander-in-chief of the armed forces, controls the government, names most top officials and has the last word in most state affairs. He can be legally ousted only with great difficulty. The president names the prime minister, who must then be confirmed by the State Duma (lower house of parliament), and also names all other ministers. He can chair government meetings, which in effect gives him control of the cabinet. The president also has the right to dismiss the prime minister and the government. The president has the right to issue decrees which do not contradict the constitution. With many vital laws still not adopted, these powers enable him to bypass parliament on some important decisions. The president signs into law all legislation passed by the Duma or the Federation Council upper house. He can veto legislation and the veto can be overturned only by a two-thirds majority in the corresponding chamber. The president heads the armed forces, names all top military officials and has the power to declare a state of emergency in the whole country or parts of it. The president also names all top judicial officials and the prosecutor-general, who must later be approved by parliament..."

IRAN CALLS FOR THE DESTRUCTION ON ISRAEL TO USHER IN THE NEW MILLENNIUM December 31, 1999

Associated Press reported: "Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called Friday for the destruction of Israel, saying it was the only way to solve the problems of the Middle East. Khamenei's remarks came as millions of Iranians held rallies across Iran to protest Israel's control over Jerusalem The demonstrations for 'Al-Quds Day' -- Al-Quds is the Arabic name for Jerusalem -- spilled over into anti-American protests because of U.S. support for Israel. 'The hands of the U.S. are fully stained with the blood of the Palestinians,' Khamenei told hundreds of thousands of Iranians in his Friday prayer sermon at Tehran University. He said there is only one possible solution to unrest in the Middle East, 'namely the annihilation and destruction of the Zionist state.'"

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT BORIS YELTSIN RESIGNS December 31, 1999

Reuters reported early today: Russian President Boris Yeltsin said in a shock television announcement on Friday that he intended to resign before the end of his term next year. He also named Prime Minister Vladimir Putin as acting president until an election is held in three months. 'I am going. I am going earlier than my established time,' Yeltsin said in a broadcast on state-owned ORT television. He said Russia needed to go into the new century with new political leaders. Yeltsin spoke slowly and calmly as he announced his resignation on the last day of the 20th century. Yeltsin, 68, has dominated Russian politics since he became president in 1991, leading Russia from the wreck of the former Soviet Union into a new era of democracy. 'Today on the last day of the old century I am going to resign,' he said. Putin, a man he has already named as his preferred successor, would be acting president for three months ahead of elections, he said. Yeltsin's term was due to end in six months but he said he did not want to hold on to power. He said he was sorry he had not fulfilled all the hopes of Russians after the collapse of the Soviet Union."

POWERFUL Y2K SOLAR STORMS COULD DISPRUPT TERRESTRIAL TECHNOLOGIES December 31, 1999

MSNBC reported: “Stormy weather on the sun could add to the headaches caused by Year 2000 computer glitches, experts warn. But there’s a silver lining to this cloud: The short-term outlook indicates that the sun will be relatively quiet as the New Year dawns. Researchers say the Year 2000 marks the peak of an 11-year cycle in solar activity, when the sun hurls violent storms of charged particles into space at speeds of up to 2 million mph (3.2 million kilometers per hour). The power of such outbursts can equal more than million 100-megaton atomic bombs. When severe radiation storms sweep over Earth’s magnetic field, satellites can be knocked out of commission, electric power grids can go haywire, radio transmissions can be disrupted. Among the potential victims: anyone who relies on satellite broadcasts, pagers, cellular phones and the navigation systems used for airplane flights and other applications — in short, virtually anyone linked to the high-tech world (although computer networks connected by land lines are not likely to be directly affected)..."

USE OF MORE POWERFUL RUSSIAN WEAPONS THREATENED IN CHECHNYA December 31, 1999

Agence France Presse reported: “Russia threatened to use more powerful weapons against the rebels of Chechnya as federal forces fought in the streets of Grozny Thursday for the sixth day…Chechen fighters were reported to have clashed for half-an-hour Thursday with Russian paratroopers in an unsuccessful bid to take control of a key supply route leading into Georgia to the south. Betraying impatience with their progress against an estimated 2,000 Chechen fighters defending the ruined capital, Russia's top commanders threatened late Wednesday to use more powerful weapons. ‘We possess much more powerful means of destruction than we have so far used,’ said General Anatoly Kornukov, head of the Russian air force..."

FORESHADOWS OF 666—DEVELOPMENTS IN 1999 part 1 December 31, 1999

The following is an excerpt from the November 1999 Van Impe Intelligence Briefing:

”...The real shocker came as we learned and verified that a U.S. patent (Patent #5,878,155 online at HERE) was applied for in 1996 and granted on March 2, 1999 for a ‘method for verifying human identity during electronic sales transactions.’ An abstract with the government patent office describes it as ‘A method...presented for facilitating sales transactions by electronic media. A bar code or a design is tattooed on an individual. Before the sales transaction can be consummated, the tattoo is scanned with a scanner. Characteristics about the scanned tattoo are compared to characteristics about other tattoos stored on a computer database in order to verify the identity of the buyer. Once verified, the seller may be authorized to debit the buyer's electronic bank account in order to consummate the transaction. The seller's electronic bank account may be similarly updated.’...”

WAR RAMPAGES THROUGH THIRD WORLD December 31, 1999

Associated Press reported: “An increase in military coups and an erosion in democratic advances have helped push the number of nations in conflict to 65, nearly twice the level near the end of the Cold War, a new survey finds. The author of the survey predicts even more turmoil ahead. ‘It's going to be a very tough next 20 years,’ said retired Army Maj. Andy Messing Jr., executive director of the National Defense Council Foundation. He said the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and tensions caused by an increasing world population add to the danger. In its annual report on battle zones, released Wednesday, the foundation said the number of countries in conflict was up by five from a year ago - meaning that the century is coming to a close with one third of the world's 193 nations afflicted by war, civil strife or other forms of violence..."

AFTER WITHDRAWL FROM GOLAN HEIGHTS—NO ‘EARLY WARNING’ SYSTEM December 31, 1999

IsraelWire reported: “Israel's suggestion for establishing early warning radar stations in the Golan, after a Golan withdrawal, was turned down in favor of an air and satellite surveillance system - according to a report in the Arabic al-Kadar newspaper published in Paris, which quoted a senior Syrian source in Washington. According to the Arabic periodical, the system will include a series of satellites and the use of American spy planes. According to their source, Syria refused all suggestions of early warning stations on Mount Hermon, and Prime Minister Ehud Barak accepted their claims that land-based systems are less effective than air systems.”

NEW ATOMIC CLOCK UNVEILED December 31, 1999

Associated Press reported: “The excitement of New Year's Eve came two days early for the nation's timekeepers. On Wednesday, government scientists unveiled a new atomic clock that is the most accurate in the United States and one of just two like it in the world. The rest of the week will be downhill. Physicists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology lab likely will wrap up their Y2K watch about 7 p.m. EST on New Year's Eve, when midnight strikes in England, the starting point for Coordinated Universal Time. If the changeover occurs without problems, the hallways of the mazelike federal lab will be deserted soon afterward. But the excitement was running high when the clock, dubbed NIST F-1, was introduced. In development for four years, the cesium atomic fountain clock is designed to keep time accurately to within a second's loss or gain in 20 million years, compared with the older clock, which loses one second in 3 million years, the scientists said..."

AMERICA HAS 30-DAY STOCKPILE OF OIL December 31, 1999

UPI reported: “The United States has about a 30-day supply of gasoline on hand heading into the New Year. The American Petroleum Institute said Wednesday that inventories as of last week included about 60 million barrels of fuel available at retail gas stations and another 192.6 million barrels in pipelines, storage tanks, and at the refineries. The API said consumers go through about 8 million barrels of gasoline per day; there are 42 gallons in a barrel.”

8 MOTHER OF FOUR SNAPS OUT OF COMA AFTER 16 YEARS ON LIFE SUPPORT December 30, 1999

ABC News reported yesterday: “For 16 years, life for Patti White Bull had been very much the same — not much of a life at all, her body locked in a coma-like state, fed by a tube. But on Christmas Day this year, she was miraculously awake, writing a letter to her mother, dressing herself and walking with support. ‘Absolutely extraordinary,’ is how one medical expert described the 42-year-old New Mexico woman’s sudden awakening after more than a decade and a half. And today, like many other Americans in this holiday season, White Bull headed to a shopping mall, according to her doctor, Elliott Marcus. It was her first request. ‘It really is quite amazing,’ says Gregory O’Shanick, national medical director for the Brain Injury Association. ‘In general, people don’t spontaneously emerge from a minimally conscious state. It’s a gradual process. It’s not like a light switch going on.’ But that seems to be exactly what has happened to White Bull, a mother of four who lost consciousness during the birth of her youngest child. For the past 10 years, she has been in a nursing home in ‘total care.’ Her ex-husband Mark White Bull, who divorced her three years after she lost consciousness, planned to visit her today with their children, now 25, 19, 17 and 16..."

FREE ‘MORNING AFTER’ [ABORTION] PILLS TO BE AVAILABLE ONLINE December 30, 1999

The New Zealand Press reported: "‘Morning-after’ pills are being offered free on the Internet, and an abortion pill may soon be available. A site offering no-questions-asked birth control solutions is giving away Norlevo ‘morning-after’ pills to anyone wanting to take part in what it claims is a ‘worldwide scientific trial’. The group hopes soon to sell the abortion pill RU-486, which is illegal in this country. It is sold in France and Britain and can replace surgical abortions if taken within eight weeks of conception. New Zealanders have already been accessing the site to buy the female condom Femidom, which is not available here. But Medical Association chairwoman Dr Pippa MacKay condemned the offer of contraceptive or morning-after pills without prescriptions, and said any sales of RU-486 would be ‘hazardous in the extreme’. A Sydney-based group, which claims it wants to help to curb the world's population explosion, is behind the site..."

GLOBAL WEATHER BECOMING MORE ‘VOLATILE’ December 30, 1999

Reuters reported: “As tropical Thailand and Vietnam shivered in chilly temperatures in the past few days, experts ask whether this is another worrying sign at the turn of the millennium of an ever more volatile world climate. ‘Our climate is changing rapidly...our new data and understanding point to a critical situation,’ said top officials from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the British Meteorological Office in a recent letter to a London newspaper. The last months of the millennium have witnessed a string of weather-related disasters -- up to 50,000 people killed by mudslides and flash floods in Venezuela, 10,000 dead after a cyclone in eastern India, hundreds dead in Vietnam flooding, and more than 100 killed by storms and avalanches in Western Europe. This followed a 1998 year already labelled by experts as the costliest ever for insured losses from catastrophes triggered by storms, floods, drought and fires. U.S. temperatures in 1999 will be the second-warmest this century, topped only by 1998, NOAA said this week. ‘As the average temperature goes up, we can expect more extreme events -- floods, drought, more severe storms, according to British Meteorological Office head Peter Ewins..."

GERMAN CHANCELLOR SAYS EUROPE MUST UNITE AGAINST AMERICA December 30, 1999

Associated Press reported: “Europe must act more like a single country if it wants to challenge U.S. economic and political dominance, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Tuesday. Asked in a television interview whether the United States lacked consideration for its allies, Schroeder said: ‘Yes, that certainly is so. There is a risk of America looking inward because of its huge economic power and its huge political weight, and it would be regrettable if that process continues.’ But European nations have to do their part by uniting behind common goals, Schroeder said, noting the 15-nation European Union's decision this year to appoint a senior diplomat as a first step toward a hoped-for joint foreign policy. ‘Whining about U.S. dominance doesn't help. We have to act,’ Schroeder said in the interview with Phoenix public TV..."

NEW REPORT SAYS ISRAEL HAS MILITARY ADVANTAGE IN MIDDLE EAST  December 30, 1999

MSNBC reported: “In the long-running Middle East conflict, it is rare to find a sober assessment of the billions of dollars spent on weapons in the region. But this week, Tel Aviv University published a weighty tome that provides a clear look at military capability in the Middle East. It happily concludes that none of Israel’s Arab neighbors can afford to keep up the pace of purchase any more. That leaves Israel, as the lone regional superpower, in a unique position to offer peace on its own terms. ‘The Middle East Military Balance 1999-2000,’ published by the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, details the military might of every country in the region — complete with graphs and flow-charts. Any way you cut the nut, the report concludes, Israel has the edge. It’s been going that way since 1982 when Israel crushed the Palestine Liberation Organization and its Syrian patrons in Lebanon. The Arabs saw then the power of a modern war machine using its army, navy and air force in coordinated operations..."

AMERICAN POPULATION REPORT AT END OF THE CENTURY December 30, 1999
Reuters reported: “The United States will have two million more partygoers than last year as Americans prepare to ring in the New Year, the Commerce Department's Census Bureau said Tuesday. The resident population for the United States as of Jan. 1, 2000 is projected at 274,024,000, a 0.9 percent increase from 271,584,000 during the same time last year, the Commerce Department said. The racial make-up of the United States remains predominately white with 82 percent, African Americans represent almost 13 percent, U.S. citizens of Hispanic origin make-up more than 11 percent, Asian and Pacific Islanders 4 percent and American Indians represent less than 1 percent. Hispanics are not considered a racial group by the Census Bureau. The New Year's Day population projection represents an increase of 25,233,000 or 10.1 percent over the population of 248,791,000 on Census Day 1990. And since the last turn of the century, the United States has added approximately 200 million more people. The country's population on July 1, 1900 was 76,094,000, according to the Census Bureau..."

SUPER BACTERIA CREATED BY SCIENTISTS TO EAT TOXIC WASTE December 30, 1999

Yahoo! News reported: “The bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans already holds the title as the world's toughest organism: It can survive an atomic blast. Now scientists have bioengineered it into a ‘superbug’' that can digest the toxic leftovers of the nuclear age. Government geneticists said they inserted genes from another form of bacteria into Deinococcus, producing a superbug that transforms toxic mercury compounds commonly found at nuclear weapons production sites into less harmful forms. The pink-colored bacterium smells like rotten cabbage. It was discovered in canned meat in 1956. It is believed to be 2 billion years old, making it one of Earth's earliest life forms. Scientists believe it evolved when Earth was bombarded with more radiation than today. It can survive 1.5 million rads of gamma radiation, or about 3,000 times the lethal dose for humans. It also can survive high doses of ultraviolet radiation and long periods of dehydration."

YOUNG RUSSIAN DRAFTEES FIGHT RUSSIAN WAR December 30, 1999

The South China Morning Post reported: “As Russian forces intensify their offensive against the Chechen capital Grozny, columns of tanks and armoured vehicles rumble every day towards the breakaway republic, bristling with machine guns, rockets and grenade-launchers. The teenage crews that man them look far less fearsome…Despite government assurances that no conscripts with less than a year's military experience would be sent into battle, several soldiers in Sasha's unit said they had been drafted just six months ago, after graduating from high school. Sasha, from the Ural Mountains city of Chelyabinsk, was drafted in June, when he was 18. ‘This is the first day of the war for me,’ he said...When asked if his men were ready for battle, the 25-year-old unit commander, who identified himself as Yuri, thought a moment and said: ‘Somewhat.’..."

2 ISLAMIC EXTREMISTS WILLING TO SELL HUMAN KIDNEYS TO PAY FOR ASSASSINATION OF AUTHOR December 30, 1999

The BBC reported: “More than 500 Iranians have pledged to sell one of their kidneys to pay for the killing of British author Salman Rushdie, condemned to death 10 years ago by religious decree. Islamic militia in the holy Shi'ite city of Mashhad were behind the campaign, which was endorsed by officials in the elite Revolutionary Guards, the hardline Iranian daily Kayhan reports. A total of 508 people, including six Muslims from countries outside Iran, have signed up to sell a kidney, Kayhan said. Selling organs is legal in Iran, with transactions overseen by a state organs bank. The organisers, part of the Basiji volunteer militia force, planned to publicise their campaign on the internet to seek worldwide support. Late revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, or religious edict, condemning Mr Rushdie to death in 1989. He accused Mr Rushdie, who only recently emerged from hiding, of blasphemy in his novel The Satanic Verses..."

EARTHQUAKE ROCKS MEXICO December 29, 1999

The BBC reported today: "A moderately strong earthquake rocked central and southern Mexico on Tuesday night, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The National Seismological Observatory said the quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was on the Pacific coast in southern Guerrero state, according to US Geological Survey seismologists. High-rise buildings were seen swaying in the state capital and a civil protection department spokesman said some high tension cables had fallen, but no other damage had so far been identified. The quake also caused some panic in Mexico City, about 150 miles (240 km) away..."

CHINA WARNS FUTURE AMERICAN PRESIDENTS AGAINST RECOGIZING TAIWAN December 29, 1999

The South China Morning Post reported: “The next US president must stick to a ‘one China’ policy and make clear Washington will never recognize Taiwan as a sovereign nation, Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said in an interview published yesterday. ‘The Taiwan problem is the most difficult and challenging issue between the United States and China,’ Mr Tang was quoted by the Sankei Shimbun as telling Japanese journalists in Beijing. ‘It is a major concern for us to see whether a new US president and his subsequent administration will abide by the current policy and affirm US standpoints’ on Taiwan. Bill Clinton leaves office in January 2001, with Republican contender George W. Bush the frontrunner. Mr Bush recently defended Washington's ‘one China’ policy as well as Beijing's entrance to the World Trade Organization. Beijing has not ruled out the use of force to thwart independence for Taiwan..."

IN 2000, THE INTERNET TO BE ‘MAINSTREAM’ IN AMERICA December 29, 1999

ZDNN reported: “That's the buzzword used by Net watchers when they talk about what's in store for the Internet in the year 2000. During the last year of the current millennium, people of all age groups and income levels will be coming online for the first time and changing what used to be a haven for techies into an integrated part of everyday life. ‘The Internet in 1999 was like television in the year 1951,’ said Paul Saffo, president of the Institute for the Future. ‘In 1951, TV really started to take off, and in subsequent years it just dramatically increased its reach. That's what we'll see with the Internet in the next few years.’ Online research firm Jupiter Communications predicts 60 percent of the United States population will own a computer in the year 2000, and more than 49 percent of households will be online. The number of men versus women online is also on track to even out. In fact, by 2001 the number of women online is expected to slightly exceed the number of men..."

CELEBRATING YEAR 2000 FORBIDDEN BY MUSLIM CLERIC December 29, 1999

Associated Press reported: “A senior Saudi cleric warned Muslims Tuesday against celebrating the new millennium or the new year. ‘Celebrating the holidays of the infidels is not allowed, even if its out of courtesy, because they are not holidays that Allah revealed,’ said Sheik Abdullah bin Jabrain, a member of the Saudi Ifta, or Islamic legal committee. He said the new year holiday was not mentioned in Islam's holy book, the Koran, or any of the other holy books and it was created by ‘Christians who legalized what Allah did not sanction.’ ‘Muslims are forbidden from glorifying these days, congratulating those who follow them and showing any form of happiness or joy which would recognize this heresy,’ he said..."

RED CROSS CONFIRMS DEATH TOLL IN VENEZUELA COULD REACH 50,000 December 29, 1999

MSNBC reported: “A top Red Cross official estimated on Tuesday that between 20,000 and 50,000 people were killed by mudslides and flash floods that devastated Venezuela's Caribbean coast two weeks ago. George Weber, secretary general of the Geneva-based International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said the catastrophe could rank as Latin America's worst natural disaster of the 20th century. 'All the figures I have received here say there were between 20,000 and 50,000 dead. There is no exact figure,’ he told a news conference. Venezuelan government ministers have said that between 20,000 and 30,000 people were thought to have died in the tragedy. No top government official has mentioned a possible toll as high as 50,000 dead. Most of the victims were buried under avalanches of mud, rocks and trees that crashed down a mountain range spreading havoc along a thin strip of the Caribbean coast, in Vargas state, just north of the Venezuelan capital Caracas..."

INTERNATIONAL INTERNET TIME PROPOSED December 29, 1999

The BBC reported: “Prime Minister Tony Blair is backing the creation of a standard internet time based on Greenwich Mean Time. Downing Street has confirmed that Mr Blair is supporting moves to create Greenwich Electronic Time (Get), which is being launched on New Year's Day. The idea of Get is to provide a common standard for all electronic commerce around the world. But it would also maintain the status of the Greenwich Observatory as the home of time for the next millennium. Get would work in a similar way to Greenwich Mean Time, under which time throughout the world is measured from a line of longitude which passes through the south-east London site. All e-mail messages and e-commerce transactions already carry a 'time stamp' based on Co-ordinated Universal Time - the modern equivalent of GMT. But most computer clocks have software which converts e-mail and message dates into local time. Supporters of Get argue that although that is adequate for personal e-mail, it is not suitable for global electronic trading..."

IMPORTANT NEW AIDS TEST CREATED December 29, 1999

The London Telegraph reported: “British researchers are poised to transform HIV treatment around the world and could end up saving millions of lives, it was disclosed yesterday. They have developed a blood test to tell doctors when the Aids virus is hiding in the body. The test will enable drug treatments for HIV to be made much more effective. Doctors expect it will lead to therapies that control the virus and halt its progression to Aids. Until now, the ability of HIV to hide away in organs such as the brain, eyes and testicles has proved a major obstacle to effective treatment. Normal blood tests may indicate that anti-retroviral drugs have stopped the virus in its tracks when it is continuing to replicate. Researchers led by Dr Sunil Shaunak at Hammersmith Hospital, west London, discovered an HIV ‘calling card’ which shows that the virus has gone to ground in some hidden part of the body. It consists of small loops or ‘circles’ of viral DNA, the waste products of replication, which can be found in white blood cells. By detecting and tracking the circles it is possible to show that the virus is alive and replicating in a patient taking anti-retroviral therapy. Treatment can then be tailored to the individual to stop all viral replication..."

2 CULT DEPROGRAMMERS PREPARE FOR Y2K DISILLUSIONMENT December 29, 1999

Associated Press reported: “After quietly existing deep in southeast Ohio's Appalachian foothills for 14 years, a treatment center for former cult members anticipates that the year 2000 could be a busy one. The Wellspring Retreat and Resource Center, which bills itself as the nation's only live onsite counseling center for recovering cult victims, expects cultists disillusioned by unfulfilled millennial prophecies to soon dot its client list. ‘It could be an interesting year,’ said founder Paul Martin, a psychologist and former cult member. ‘There won't be some quantum shift in the need for our services, but there could be a lot of failed prophecy after this event.’ And that, he said, ‘could lead to cult members questioning their leaders and possibly leaving.’ Already, the staff -- composed mostly of former cult followers -- has lined up more than 75 clients to treat in 2000, compared with about 50 seen in 1999, said Liz Shaw, an outreach coordinator. Many cult leaders have predicted the return of Jesus Christ, the apocalypse and mass deaths with the turn of the century..."

IRAN DROWNING IN SMOG December 29, 1999

Associated Press reported: “President Mohammad Khatami is ready to pay the price to clean up Tehran, a newspaper reported Tuesday as more of the capital's residents donned masks against thick smog. Hamshahri newspaper reported that Khatami had allocated funds to combat the problem, but did not say how much. Tehran's mayor had earlier pegged the cleanup cost at $2.2 billion. ‘This situation is no longer tolerable,’ the newspaper quoted Khatami as saying. Tens of thousands of Tehran's residents are wearing masks to protect themselves from the heavy smog -- much of it blamed on cars -- that has hung over the capital for a month. State radio has warned that the pollution is expected to get worse over the next few days..."

SEATTLE CANCELS NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATIONS 'JUST IN CASE' !!!!!!! December 28, 1999

Associated Press reported today: "The mayor has canceled the city's New Year's Eve celebration below its landmark Space Needle, citing the possibility of terrorist acts. 'It is safer to be prudent,' Mayor Paul Schell said Monday. 'This is already an unprecedented, unpredictable New Year's, and we did not want to take chances with public safety, no matter how remote the threat might seem.' International media coverage of the event makes it 'impossible for federal officials to rule out the area as a terrorist target,' he said. The mayor said federal officials have not advised him of any specific threat to the city. An estimated 50,000 people had been expected to gather below the sky-dotting Needle, located at the 20-acre Seattle Center just off the city's downtown. The 605-foot landmark, built for the 1962 World's Fair, is a traditional gathering point for New Year's Eve revelers..."

93 DEAD SO FAR FROM RECORD STORMS IN WESTERN EUROPE December 28, 1999

Associated Press reported today: "A second wave of fierce gales tore up trees and blew roofs from buildings today in France, killing 13 people along the southwestern Atlantic coast and bringing the death toll from recent storms in Western Europe to 93, police said. Following storms that ravaged the north of France on Sunday, a second wave of rain and devastating winds, some up to 93 mph, hit several regions in the country. The new fatalities brought the death toll in France since Sunday to 57. Today's storm brought torrential rain to the north, causing rivers to overflow their banks. There were no immediate reports of fatalities. In Paris today, the swollen Seine River flooded riverside roads and walkways in several parts of the city. Paris officials have asked the government to declare the city a natural disaster area..."

2 AS MANY AS 800,000 HUTUS IN DANGER IN INTERNMENT CAMPS December 28, 1999

The London Telegraph reported: “Hundreds of thousands of Burundian Hutus have been forcibly herded into squalid internment camps in an attempt to crush rebels that the army fears are bent on repeating the genocide that gripped neighbouring Rwanda. Aid workers fear that the ‘regroupment’ camps now hold up to 800,000 Hutus in terrible conditions that breed disease, malnutrition and ethnic hatred. Hundreds are thought to have died. In Mubimbi camp, perched on a hilltop on the edge of the rebel-infested Kibira jungle, the signs of hunger and sickness are obvious. Children with stick-like limbs and distended bellies crowd around mud huts. The air is full of the sound of infants crying and the smell of sewage..."

HUBBEL SPACE TELESCOPE REPAIRS COMPLETE AND SPACE SHUTTLE SAFELY BACK ON EARTH December 28, 1999

CNN reported: “After finishing repairs on the Hubble Space Telescope, space shuttle Discovery's astronauts performed the last crucial task of their mission, releasing the $3 billion observatory back into space on Saturday. For five days the four-story observatory rode upright in the back of Discovery's cargo bay as space-walking astronauts made upgrades and installed new parts… After repeated launch delays, NASA cut the Discovery mission from 10 to eight days and eliminated a fourth spacewalk in order to get the shuttle back in plenty of time before New Year's Eve, to avoid any potential Y2K computer problems. The shuttle is scheduled to land Monday at Kennedy Space Center.”

COLUMBINE HIGH SCHOOL TESTIMONY LIVES ON BEYOND THE GRAVE December 28, 1999

Associated Press reported: “For 13-year-old Sara Evans, the story of Cassie Bernall professing her belief in God shortly before she was killed at Columbine High School was the defining moment that led to her faith. ‘After we attended a memorial service (for Columbine victims), I turned my life around,’ said Evans, a volunteer at Trinity Christian Center, where funerals were held for four of the 13 victims. Heather Johnson, another 13-year-old volunteer, said the affirmation is ‘an inspiration.’ ‘It makes me want to strive to live better,’ she said. ‘I'd want to have enough strength to say 'yes' for God.’ Witnesses had said 17-year-old Bernall closed her eyes and clasped her hands in prayer when one of the gunmen pointed a shotgun at her and asked if she believed in God. Yes, she said -- and he killed her. The story turned Bernall into a martyr who had found God after falling in with the wrong crowd, dabbling in the occult and experimenting with drugs.

STUDENT LEADER OF TIENANMEN SQUARE UPRISING NOW PREACHES THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST December 28, 1999

Charisma reported: “Ten years after the Chinese army crushed the student revolution in Tienanmen Square, one of the young leaders of the uprising has a new cause -- Christ. A law student at Beijing University, Xiong Yan helped organize the student hunger strikes of 1989 that challenged China's Communist rule, and was in Tienanmen Square on June 4 when the army moved in to end the students' defiance. Now 35 and married with two children, Yan is a second-year student at Covenant Theological Seminary, near St. Louis. ‘I used to talk freedom in terms of human rights and the rule of law,’ he told ‘The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.’ ‘After studying theology, I have a new world view that explains the cause of injustice in every society, including the [United States], as a falling away from God.’ Arrested and held in prison for 19 months after the student revolt, Yan was beaten and subjected to ‘re-education.’ Released in 1991, he was barred from studying or working. He came to America as a political refugee the following year and joined the army. He still serves with the Army Reserves. Yan became a Christian through a meeting with a professor at Covenant Seminary and his discovery of the English poet John Milton, whom he calls the magisterial voice of God, man's fall and redemption through Christ, said the ‘Post-Dispatch.’”

8 NEW BRITISH POLL SAYS MOST PUBLIC FIGURES DO NOT BELIEVE IN CREATION December 27, 1999

The BBC reported: “The majority of leading public figures including church leaders and politicians do not believe in the Biblical version of the Creation, according to a survey. A study by BBC Radio 4's Today programme provided a snapshot view of the state of Christian faith at the end of the 20th Century, and revealed the majority doubt the Virgin Birth. Questionnaires were sent to 1,000 public figures including religious leaders, leading politicians, newspaper editors, scientists and head teachers. Not surprisingly perhaps, the most sceptical responses came from scientists with only one believing in the act of Creation and the majority answering ‘No’ to nearly all the questions. Politicians also seem unconvinced by many traditional Christian teachings with less than one quarter believing Adam and Eve existed. The most revealing answers however, came from members of the clergy. Of the 103 church leaders who took part in the survey - including Church of England and Catholic bishops and Methodist ministers - only three said they believed in the literal, Biblical, version of the Creation in which God created the world in six days. Asked whether they believed that Adam and Eve really existed, only 13 of the church leaders said yes, with 80 saying no..."
FIERCE STORMS POUND EUROPE December 27, 1999

The International Herald Tribune reported: Fierce storms ravaged Europe on Sunday, killing at least 63 people in France, Switzerland and Germany and leaving a trail of uprooted trees, broken buildings and debris-strewn streets. Gusts of up to 170 kilometers (105 miles) per hour tore through northern France, including Paris. The Interior Ministry said at least 26 people were killed, some when falling trees crashed into their cars. The death toll was expected to rise. News agencies put the death toll in France at more than 30..."

CHRISTIANS WORLDWIDE CELEBRATE THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST December 25, 1999

Global celebrations of the incarnation began today as Christians everywhere rejoice in God’s redemptive plan for mankind--God taking the form of a man, living a sinless life, dying on the cross bearing the penalty of the sins of the human race, and raising victorious from the grave to give the gift of salvation to anyone who will take it by faith. “For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.” John 3:16-17 (KJV)

AMERICAN FOOTSOLDIERS TO RECEIVE RIFLE OF THE FUTURE December 25, 1999

The LA Times reported: “Ever since the Vietnam War, the American infantryman's most valued tool and trusted friend has been the M-16, a lightweight but lethal rifle that can spew devastating torrents of high-speed fire. Soon the Army will be giving the foot soldier a new battlefield companion, a high-tech weapon designed to revolutionize the timeless tactics of combat by giving U.S. troops the ability, in effect, to shoot around corners. The new weapon, which looks like a steroid-fed prop from a sci-fi movie, uses lasers to guide smart shells that explode in the air above concealed enemy soldiers, spraying them with deadly metal fragments. The air-burst shells effectively eliminate the protection provided by the boulders, trenches and walls that have hidden soldiers for centuries. It ‘leaves no place to hide,’ said Vernon Shisler, a manager of the Army's development program at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. When it is put in the hands of soldiers several years from now, the Objective Individual Combat Weapon will give U.S. light infantry and Special Forces the kind of decisive high-tech edge that already has been built into American tanks, aircraft and artillery, according to its advocates. They say that the weapon will be especially well suited for the urban battlefields of the future, in places like Somalia and Chechnya, where cover is plentiful..."

FAMOUS CANADIAN SCIENTIST SAYS SOUNDING ‘DEATH KNELL OF ENVIRONMENTAL ARMAGEDDON December 25, 1999

Reuters reported: “A little Y2K chaos would not be such a bad thing, or so says David Suzuki, a respected Canadian geneticist, broadcaster and environmentalist. ‘I hope there is a major glitch. It might give Mother Earth a rest,’ the 63-year-old host of CBC-TV's ‘The Nature of Things,’ broadcast in more than 50 countries, told Reuters. ‘I think it would be wonderful if things collapsed for a few days. Chaos would happen...but it would be an amazing opportunity for people to really start thinking about things -- and a global collapse would really make people think.’...Where we are is a dismal place, according to Suzuki and his book ‘From Naked Ape to Superspecies,’ written with Holly Dressel. ‘Water is polluted, the air is polluted, soil is polluted. We've essentially trashed the globe and I don't think there's any question that the major challenge facing us in the coming years is what are we going to do about it,’ he said. Although seen by many as a doomsday prophet, Suzuki insists that not only he and groups such as Greenpeace are sounding the death knell of environmental Armageddon -- scientists are too. ‘From Naked Ape to Superspecies’ refers to a document, 'World Scientists Warning to Humanity,' signed in 1992 by more that 1,600 senior scientists from around the world, including more than half of all living Nobel Prizewinners. The document stated that, as of 1992, humans have as little as 10 years to avoid an ecological catastrophe. Since then, Suzuki says, the destruction has accelerated..."

U.S. PRESIDENT SUPPORTS COMPLETE ACCEPTANCE OF SEXUAL PERVERSION December 25, 199

The Washington Times reported: “President Clinton believes the ‘real problem’ with Americans' attitudes toward homosexuality is there are too many heterosexuals who lack ‘open, personal contact’ with homosexuals. In a taped interview broadcast Thursday night on CNN's ‘Larry King Live,’ Mr. Clinton said Americans have ‘come a long way’ in their acceptance of homosexuality since he became president, but problems remain. ‘The real problem, I still believe, is the absence of open, personal contact,’ Mr. Clinton said. ‘They don't see that there are people who — their friends, their sisters, their brothers, their sons, their daughters, their co-workers, and it's not a lifestyle people choose. It is the way people are.’ Mr. Clinton said he agrees with a recent Vermont Supreme Court ruling that homosexual couples should receive equal health care and property benefits. But the president said he still does not consider homosexual ‘marriage’ as a legal union. ‘Marriage in our culture and to me has a certain connotation...I think it's basically a union for the purpose of, among other things, having children,’ Mr. Clinton said..."

AMERICAN JEWS TOLD TO IMMIGRATE TO ISRAEL December 25, 1999

IsraelWire reported: “Two organizations, Homeward Bound and Shuva (Return), held a press conference on Thursday, December 23, 1999 in Jerusalem calling for American Jews to immigrate to Israel. The two emergency movements are encouraging American Jewry to ‘pick up, pack up, and come home to Israel before the ominous Y2K threat for which Jews will be blamed, together with blatant anti-Semitism that is spreading daily throughout the U.S. makes it impossible for them to escape’. Among those scheduled to participate in the conference is Rabbi Nachman Kahane, brother of the late MK, Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was murdered by an Arab assassin several years ago after addressing American Jews on this issue.”

EARTHQUAKE KILLS AT LEAST 22 LEAVES SCORES INJURED IN ALGERIA December 23, 1999

Associated Press reported: “A strong earthquake shook western Algeria, causing buildings to collapse in residential areas and killing at least 22 people, the Interior Ministry said today. The area around Ain Temouchent, 60 miles west of the coastal city of Oran, was hit hardest by Wednesday's quake, which had a magnitude of 5.8. An earthquake with a magnitude of 5 can cause considerable damage. The final death toll had not yet been established, but the Interior Ministry, in its latest count, lowered the number of dead from 28 to 22. No cause was given. Algerian radio's Channel 3 quoted the ministry as saying that 49 people were hospitalized. Scores of others were less seriously injured. The quake struck Wednesday evening, as residents of the area, situated near the Tessala mountain range, were breaking their daylong fast for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan..."

ISRAEL SEEKING ADVANCED WEAPONS FROM AMERICA TO DEAL WITH PULL-OUT FROM GOLAN HEIGHTS December 23, 1999

The World Tribune reported: “Prime Minister Ehud Barak is pressing the United States for a commitment to provide the most advanced American weaponry and technology in any Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights. An Israeli newspaper on Tuesday said this includes six early-warning Awacs aircraft. ‘We expect that some of the most sophisticated weapons and early warning systems in the world will be made available to us so that Israel can stride into the coming, post-agreements, period, while maintaining its qualitative advantage,’ Barak said. Israel will also ask for unlimited access to U.S. reconnaissance satellites and to reinforce its own satellites. Military commanders, including Air Force chief Maj. Gen. Eitan Ben Eliahu, have relayed to Barak that their endorsement of a full withdrawal from the Golan Heights is linked to billions of dollars of U.S. advanced systems, such as reconnaissance satellites, advanced aircraft, missile technology and helicopters. The sources said on Tuesday that a withdrawal from the Golan would relocate several key bases in Israel's northern Galilee region. They said the region would see also the relocation of thousands of soldiers and officers to the Galilee."

DEATH TOLL IN VENEZUELA MAY REACH 50,000 December 22, 1999

The BBC reported today: “The authorities in Venezuela say they now fear that up to 50,000 people may have been killed in the flooding and mudslides that have devastated the country - but they concede the true figure will never be known. A senior civil defence official said many bodies remain buried in the mud that swept through entire coastal communities, in what is being described as Latin America's worst natural disaster this century..."

RECORD NUMBER OF NATURAL DISATERS IN 1999 December 22, 1999

Reuters reported: “Nature plagued the world with a record number of disasters in 1999 but the death toll fell far short of the worst single catastrophe of the last 1,000 years, a Chinese flood that killed 900,000 in 1887. Munich Re, one of the world's largest reinsurers, said that about 70,000 people were killed in well over 700 disasters this year, including up to 30,000 who died in floods and mudslides in Venezuela this week. Climatic changes such as global warming were partly to blame, but it was impossible to say to what extent, Munich Re said. ‘We have a feeling that climate changes will play an increasing role in the future,’ said Gerhard Berz, head of a Munich Re research team that has been collecting worldwide data on disasters for the last 25 years. Economic losses resulting from catastrophes surged to $535 billion per decade in the 1990s from $38 billion in the 1950s in price-adjusted terms, Munich Re said. Insurance losses have risen at almost twice that rate as worldwide insurance cover has increased, Munich Re said. Alongside environment changes, urban growth and growing population density are causing the increase in catastrophe losses. A violent storm in a desert is a natural spectacle but it becomes a disaster if it strikes a town..."

POWERFUL EARTHQUAKE JOLTS INDONESIA December 22, 1999

Associated Press reported: “A strong earthquake centered in the Indian Ocean shook parts of Indonesia's main island of Java today including the capital, Jakarta. There were no reports of injuries or damage. The quake had a magnitude of 6.4 at its epicenter 145 miles southwest of Jakarta, said Fauzi, a seismologist at Indonesia's Geophysics Agency. Fauzi, who like many Indonesians uses only one name, said the epicenter was located 40 miles beneath the ocean floor. The temblor, which lasted about 30 seconds, sent Jakarta residents scurrying into the streets. There have been three major quakes on the nearby island of Sumatra since Sept. 18, each having a magnitude of at least 5. The quakes occurred in remote areas..."
